Last year, we told you about our project to put into place a system to borrow reusable packaging for take-away and delivery services.

Today, we can finally announce the launch of the pilot project in 15 shops (SpinPoints) in Luxembourg City!

On Saturday 18^th March, it is Global Recycling Day! On this occasion, we will analyse the European objectives that are aiming to improve the recycling rates and recyclability of packaging.

In June last year, the package of laws called the “Offall- a Ressourcëpak” was voted. In this newsletter, we will be focussing on the articles in the package of laws that will have an impact on the types of packaging that can be used during public events and in the Horeca sector.

Since the remodelling of the sorting facility at the end of 2018 and the extension of the collection of packaging waste via the blue bag in July 2021, the quantities of packaging waste collected have gone up by 33.23 %, while the quantity of PMC (Plastic, Metal and beverage Cartons) packaging put on the market has only gone up by 1.3 %.

The term “bioplastic” has 2 meanings:

1. biobased plastic, which is produced with biological and renewable materials (such as corn starch or cellulose); and/or
2. biodegradable plastic, which can also contain conventional plastic.

Biobased plastic is not necessarily biodegradable.

Some companies are choosing this option for their packaging, but does it really have a lesser impact on the environment than conventional plastic?

Some flexible and multi-layer packaging, such as crisps bags, coffee and loose tea packets, are composed of different materials. Even tough composite packaging can be interesting to use for the storage of foods, its use has a negative impact on the recycling rate. Big quantities of these packaging materials are put on the Luxembourg market every year and they are neither collected, nor recycled.

The improvement of the recyclability and the reuse of packaging will become increasingly important in the upcoming years, as highlighted again by the package of laws voted in April. In our last newsletter, we presented our pilot project for a reusable cup system.
